The minute I stepped foot into Osteria Del Principe I felt as if I were transported back to Italy for another amazing dining experience (a girl can only dream). The family-owned restaurant serves only authentic, homemade, Italian imported cuisine, which allows New Yorkers to fully indulge in traditional Italian food right in the heart of Manhattan's Flatiron district. The family has been dedicated to making artisanal charcuterie, such as prosciutto di San Daniele, for over 60 years and you can taste the passion that they put into their food with each bite.
With giant photos of their family's prosciutto business on the walls, the open kitchen area and the dim lighting, this restaurant's environment is a perfect setting for a romantic date night. However, the modern ambiance also makes it a trendy choice for a business lunch or dinner. To top off all the incredible cuisine, the service was outstanding. There was a warm welcoming feel, and we were never rushed. They made us feel as if we were apart of the family. I cannot wait to return very soon to try more of their dishes!
We ordered the chef's tasting of three salumi and two cheeses, which complimented the Italian merlot exquisitely. The quality of the premium prosciutto is easy to taste, and by ordering the sample platters we had the chance to appreciate and compare each flavor. Our favorite was definitely the truffle flavored prosciutto. I was in Italian cielo (heaven)!
The cheese platter included: pecorino toscano, mandorie (almonds), miele (honey), asiago and olives. The salumi platter included: prosciutto crude San Daniele 16 mesi, Tartufotto (truffle ham) & Mortadella.
Spinaci, noci e gorgonzola:
Fresh baby spinach, pears, gorgonzola cheese, walnuts and balsamic dressing. This salad was fresh and light. It was the perfect portion size while waiting for our main course.
The Papperdalle with Lamb Ragù, which is one of their specialty pasta dishes for that week, was pasta perfection. We had them split it for us since it was lunchtime, but we definitely could have finished the entire dish to ourselves.
